Grief can sometimes be like a wipe on your hard drive and when you look back it’s a blur. You’re unable to recall the people who attended and the service, especially young children who will not remember how many people loved them. A funeral is a time for grieving and celebrating life, sharing stories and reflecting. The photos are more than just a record, they capture the essence of the day, a feeling. Being able to look back is both comforting and joyous.
Discretion, respect, sensitivity and professionalism is of most importance when photographing a funeral. I shoot in a documentary style from a distance with a telephoto lens, no flash and being as unobtrusive as possible. Capturing details, tender moments and love reflected throughout the day. Life can go by so quickly you sometimes don’t realise the impact they’ve had on people’s lives until the funeral. I’m not against capturing moments of happiness or distress, it reminds you of how important their life was no matter how long or short it was. I capture real moments with taste and dignity, a collection of photographs to look back on as a reminder and celebration of life.
